When you first get your brand new PC, it starts off by being very frisky. Are you hopeful that somehow, the computer will just automatically keep on working as efficiently as the day you bought it? Sorry to tell you, but this is very, very wrong! After a few years, or depending upon usage, a few months, response times will ALWAYS degrade. And the slower it gets, the more likely it is for something to go wrong. Before you throw your PC on the rubbish heap in frustration, here are a few notes that I have written to keep your PC in Tune. Performance Tuning involves cleaning out old temporary files and cookies, defragmenting the hard drive, removing unwanted programs that make start-up time slow, and stopping unnecessary services that don't need to run. Your computer will boot up faster, open programs and files faster, have more hard drive space – if it's properly tuned.
This is not a comprehensive guide, but these tips can make a noticeable difference to the performance of your PC. See also the tips on Improving Disc Performance.
There are many products that offer to optimise your registry – improve stability, repair errors, reduce boot time and improve PC performance.
Some of these products can be dangerous. The probability of an unusable PC is high. And there is seldom an improvement in computer performance.
CCleaner is an ideal tool for optimising a Windows PC. CCleaner removes unused files from your system, cleans Internet history and the Registry. And best of all, it constains no Spyware or Adware. The Registry should be backed up before anything is changed – just in case.
A memory upgrade is inexpensive and can make an appreciable difference if your computer is low on memory. To get advice on memory requirements, download the Memory scanner from www.crucial.com . The scanner will analyse the PCs memory and provide upgrade options.
Make sure that the Operating System can support the memory upgrade. For example, Windows XP will only use 2GB of memory, although 4GB can be installed.
For instructions on how to install the memory into a PC, follow these installation steps
Services are programs that run in the background. They slow down start-up and have a continual overhead. Some of these Services can be disabled without a problem. For a full list and explanation of the Services that can be disabled in Windows 7, see: www.optimizingpc.com
The disabled services can be enabled later if needed.
Windows Content Indexing
If you don’t search your disk often or have multiple disks, then turn off the content indexing feature. To disable windows indexing:
The Aero user interface makes Windows 7 look fancy – but it can really slow down the system. To improve performance, Aero should be disabled.
The Windows 7 Visual Effects need to be disabled to boost performance.
You may have to restart the computer.
