Upgrading Access database systems to VB.Net

Upgrading Access database systems An old Microsoft Access system may need enhancing and performance improved. Rather than patching an antiquated system, an upgrade to the latest Visual Studio technology is a practical alternative.

Visual Basic.Net 2010 is now stable and mature. It has become increasingly programmer-friendly and efficient in producing quality systems. Together with the free SQL Server Express 2008, VB.Net opens up many exciting new opportunities.

Converting to VB.Net and SQL Server

  • The Visual Basic.Net code is less complex than the equivalent code required in the Access database environment.
  • A Library of tested procedures reduces development times.
  • The Back-End Access database data is easily imported into the SQL Server database.
  • The outstanding Access Report writer provides listings as before. This is done by simply opening the Access database – and invoking existing reports.
  • VB.Net is used to merge SQL Server data and Microsoft Word Document Templates – to produce attractive and user modifiable listings.
  • Forms are selected from the Menu in a hierarchical structure – as used in Windows Explorer.
  • The Multiple Document Interface (MDI) is easy to use and allows several Windows (or Forms) to be viewed at the same time.

The upgraded system is user friendly and performance greatly improved. The ongoing expense and risk of maintaining obsolete code is eliminated.

This type of solution is ideal for the growing Company, where volumes and performance are an issue.

SQL Server Express

SQL Server 2008 R2 Express can hold up to 10 gigabytes of data – enough for all but the largest Companies. There is no limit to the number of users of SQL Server Express – but for acceptable response times, an upgrade to the full-blown version of SQL Server may be needed as user numbers increase. SQL Server Express will only use 1 CPU and the maximum Memory is limited to 1 GB.

SQL Server Express does not have a Maintenance Plan wizard – so automatic Backup and Shrinking must be done with Transact-SQL and the Task Scheduler.
